Swing Away At Brynwood -- Indoors!

Brynwood Golf & Country Club members don't need to put their games on hold for the winter. In fact, the progressive Armonk club has created an indoor teaching facility to help them hone just about every part of their game while the course is covered with snow.

The club's professional staff, led by Michael Mercadante, utilizes a FlightScope Golf Simulator, and numerous other high (and low) tech tools to help golfers of all skill levels. FlightScope features customize-able challenges with varying target distances, sizes and much more, providing instant feedback on every shot, real time ball tracking, and the ability to compare your scores to PGA Tour players just to keep you motivated.

When you add the ability to workout year-round in the club's fitness center, there's no reason you can't start your season in peak form.

Sunriver Resort Lights Up Oregon

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path golf destination that’s well worth the effort to get there, Sunriver Resort is the place for you.  Located in the high desert country near Bend in the center of Oregon, the resort offers three excellent golf courses—each one unique—as well as an unending array of outdoor activities, lodging and dining choices, and seasonally mild weather year ‘round.

One of the most spectacular shots in Westchester golf history was actually struck at Sunriver. It was a 95-yard wedge that Rob Labritz, GlenArbor’s Director of Golf, holed out in 2013 during a playoff to earn a spot in the PGA Championship that year.  The shot went viral on ESPN and marked the spot, the eleventh hole on the Crosswater Course at Sunriver, as a must-try for thousands of golfers.

Crosswater at Sunriver
Crosswater is the premier course at Sunriver.  Designed by Bob Cupp, Crosswater features open water or marshy hazards on almost every hole as it skirts the Deschuttes and Little Deschuttes Rivers running through its 600-acre site.  Additional features include a couple of daunting forced carries and strongly contoured greens.  There are seven sets of tees measuring from 5,213 to a ridiculous 7,683 yards.  Even with the distance you gain from the high altitude and thin, dry air, you’ll want to choose appropriate tees to avoid unnecessarily punishing your scorecard.

Meadows at Sunriver
A completely different golf experience is found at the Meadows Course.  Architect John Fought paid tribute to American course design from the 1920s with a layout featuring classic features like directional and cross bunkers requiring a tactical, rather than pure power, approach to the game.  For a little extra fun (with or without the kids), tackle the nine-hole putting course located at the Meadows Course.

Woodlands at Sunriver
Yet another choice is the Woodlands Course, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr., design featuring rock outcroppings and impinging stands of trees that favor the accurate rather than the long-hitting golfer.  It’s a tight but not claustrophobic golf course that will hold your interest throughout the full eighteen holes.

For some extra family fun, Sunriver offers Caldera Links, a nine-hole course expressly designed to introduce your kids to the game—or to hone your short-game skills.  Holes from 60 to 185 yards feature bent grass greens and bluegrass tees and are kept in pristine condition.

Sunriver Resort began as a second-home community, so you can choose from a variety of accommodation options including single-home vacation rentals, condos, and the hotel-style Sunriver Lodge.  Nearby Sunriver Village offers a double handful of restaurants to complement the five excellent dining choices offered at the resort itself.

Non-golf activities at Sunriver are practically limitless.  Topping the list has to be float trips of several kinds—canoe, kayak, rafts, tubes, individual or group—leaving from the Marina on the picture-perfect Deschutes River.  Biking is another great way to experience the beauty along 35 miles of paved bike paths, or for the more adventuresome, on the rugged forest service roads nearby.  Guides are available for volcano tours, rock climbing, fly fishing, and many other outdoor adventures.

Resort rates and golf greens fees vary greatly by season.  For details, visit www.sunriver-resort.com.

What's New at USGA?

Tom O'Toole, Jr., USGA President
USGA President Tom O'Toole, Jr., today took the microphone at the organization's annual meeting to outline several forward-looking developments.  Following is a partial transcript of his remarks:

You will hear the words “new” and “first” repeatedly from us in 2015:

We will bring the U.S. Open Championship to the Pacific Northwest for the first time in our history, at the magnificent Chambers Bay Golf Course in Washington State. This is the first time we will conduct the championship on an all fine-fescue golf course.

We will introduce our new U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championships in May, first with the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at the Olympic Club, and then the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball at Bandon Dunes the following week.  Our commitment to providing championship excellence to all players remains a high priority with this organization.

On May 27, we will also open our newest addition to our USGA Museum, celebrating the significant contributions of one of golf’s greatest legends, Jack Nicklaus. Two weeks later, at the U.S. Open Championship, we will bestow the Bob Jones Award, our greatest honor, to Barbara Nicklaus.

We have likewise dedicated significant resources to introduce new technology this year, including the launch of a new usga.org and usopen.com this spring, to better inform, educate and inspire our members and fans.  This includes a new Rules education module to our website, as we respond to our community’s need for advanced tools they can quickly access.

New technology and new imagery will also be delivered via our partnership with Fox Sports, which began earlier this year with the airing of “Nicklaus: The Making of a Champion.”

In addition, our new pace-of-play flagstick tool will be introduced in field testing this year. Designed to help golf facilities accurately measure pace and develop solutions to accelerate the time it takes to play, it is one of the many ways we continue to devote energy to support the long-term viability, or health, of golf.

And as active participants in a strong worldwide golf community, we will provide strength and support to our allied golf organizations in matters critical to golf’s future: namely, leadership in promoting a sustainable game, both environmentally and economically  – and in this connection, we are convinced that focusing solely on participation numbers underestimates the opportunity for the golf community.

We are also committed to the exploration of a worldwide handicapping system, and a thoughtful, collaborative approach to simplify the Rules of Golf.

We will also give back to the game through allied programs such as the Latin America Amateur Championship, opening the game to a new generation and audience of golfers.

However, the primary reason we are here today is to celebrate a great milestone – we are proud to announce the formation of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship.

The opportunity to extend the inspiration of championships to this important part of golf’s family is something we approach with great humility and a sense of duty. Simply, the time is right. Support of the women’s game is at an all-time high, as we clearly experienced at Pinehurst. It serves a population of our golf community that is hungry to compete for a national title.

Moreover, interest in this particular championship has steadily increased since we began investigating its viability more than 20 years ago. Seven of the last 10 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championships have recorded more than 500 entries, with a record 554 in 2014 alone. So many women have worked hard to take their games, their fitness, their commitment, and their service to golf to new heights. They deserve a championship of the highest quality.

The facts we share with you today are as follows:

We will conduct this championship beginning in 2018.
We will mirror our U.S. Senior Open format, in conducting a 72-hole stroke-play event over four days, with a cut after 36 holes of play.
This will be a walking championship, intended for players age 50 and over.

In making this announcement today, we reinforce our passion and commitment to promote a game that is welcoming and accessible to all.  It is the right message to send to the golf industry, as we support a game that can be played for a lifetime, as both a recreational and competitive sport.

As we introduce all of these modern advances to the game – new championships, new tools and ideation in Rules education, supporting a healthy game and growing a strong golf community - we will not forget what we learned last year.  The celebration of the back-to-back U.S. Open Championships at Pinehurst clearly showed men and women can play at the same competitive level on the same course.

KPMG Women's PGA To Demonstrate Leadership

Can a golf tournament change the world?  The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship may be a start in that direction. The strong emphasis tournament sponsor KPMG is putting on the women's summit and other activities around the event designed to inspire women in business--as well as golf--shows there's more to it than who takes home the trophy.

PGA of America Secretary Suzy Whaley opened a discussion with women leaders at the PGA Show by observing that the upcoming KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club is one of the most important golf events ever played. The reason? It marks a revolutionary collaboration between the men's and women's sides of the game.  Whaley knows whereof she speaks, since she is the first elected woman officer in the history of the PGA of America.

Panelist Lynne Doughtie, Vice Chair, KPMG Advisory Practice, expanded on Whaley's assessment. "It is going to be a phenomenal event to develop, elevate, and empower women both on the golf course and off," she said.  "The course, the size of the purse, the TV coverage, all make it a big deal."  The event will be played on the West Course of Westchester Country Club, site of men's PGA Tour events for many, many years.

The remarks came at the beginning of the Inspire Greatness Panel held during the PGA Merchandise Show last week. Five leading global women influencers and trailblazers discussed the importance of the golf industry’s dedication to diversity and inclusion. PGA of America secretary Suzy Whaley, PGA/LPGA, moderated the panel which included Lynne Doughtie, Vice Chair, KPMG Advisory Practice; Paige Mackenzie, LPGA, LPGA Tour Player; Donna Orender, CEO, Orender Unlimited; and Molly Solomon, Executive Producer, Golf Channel.

The group discussed the importance of inspiring more women and minorities into leadership roles at the local, regional and national levels in the golf industry and shared their stories on how they have been inspired to greatness, who influenced them and how they are currently inspiring others to lead.

“When you don't see someone who looks like you in a leadership role, it's tough to have confidence in yourself--to try." Doughtie said. "We need to shut out that voice that says you can't do something."  Having top women achievers on and off the golf course associated with a high profile event like the KMPG Women's PGA Championship provides those all-important role models, according to the panelist.

“The cultural landscape of the industry and the makeup of its leadership has to continue to shift if our efforts to make the game more welcoming and accessible to people of all backgrounds are going to be successful,” said Sandy Cross, Senior Director of Diversity & Inclusion for the PGA of America in a release before the program.

“Some of the most successful organizations around the globe continue to demonstrate that having a more diverse leadership and staff composition has a direct positive impact on the workplace culture and ultimately the company’s ability to innovate, produce better products and services, grow their business and ultimately improve their bottom line. We’re thrilled to have these exemplary leaders here to share their insight,” Cross added.
