Tee-Off Your Season with the EWGA

The Executive Women's Golf Association's season-starting Tee-Off Luncheon will be held this year on March 30 at Brynwood G&CC in Armonk. The fun, informative event is open to both members and prospective members of the Westchester chapter of the women's golf group.

In addition to plenty of informative speakers and interesting sponsor displays, the luncheon presents a great chance to mingle with other golfers after a wretched winter. Even if you're new to the game--or have a friend who wants to take it up--the EWGA offers leagues, lessons, and opportunities for golfers of all skill levels.

One of the most important functions of the event is sign-up for the spring and summer leagues, which give golfers a structured approach to the game and opportunities to compete with women with similar golf skills. Sign-up is first-come, first-served, so get there early.

The admission price includes all the festivities as well as a buffet lunch with a cash bar.  Festivities begin at 12 and run until 4 PM and advance registration is necessary.

Lucky Local Girls of Golf

Several young ladies from the local area participated in this week's LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Team Championship at Kiawah Island. No one brought home a first place trophy but all of the participants won a trophy case full of good memories and exciting entree into the sport. Their participation was made possible by the Executive Women's Golf Association of Westchester County (EWGA Westchester) in partnership with Girls Golf of Rockland/Westchester who co-sponsor fundraising events and by provide volunteers and mentors.

Alice Hodge, 11 yrs old from Larchmont, NY, played in the two-person team tournament with a Girls Golf friend from Tennessee to place 4th in their flight, and Oliviia Stepper, 8 yrs old from Nyack, NY, participated in the Academy and was thrilled to be taught the physical and mental game of golf by wonderful LPGA/PGA professionals. Martha Kemp-Neilson from New Rochelle teamed up with another Girls Golf participant from Minnesota to place fourth in their division.

The program was introduced by the LPGA in 1989 to bring 7-17 year-old girls in to the game. The Rockland/Westchester chapter was formed in 2012. The program runs from May through August and includes educational clinics, organized practices, and mentored on-course play with EWGA volunteers. PGA teaching professionals Paula Slivinsky at the Fairwview golf Center and Sharon McQuillan at the Westchester Driving Range run clinics that teach participatns safety during play and proper mechanics of the golf swing. The mentors help out by teaching the rules of golf, etiquette of the game, and how to get around a golf course while having fun.

EWGA Tee-Off Luncheon Starts Women's Golf Season

The mild winter left many women wondering why they put their clubs away at all! The Westchester Chapter of EWGA couldn’t be more ready to spring into action and get a new better-than-ever golf season underway. The season goes into full swing this year with the EWGA's 14th Annual Tee-Off Luncheon on Sunday, April 1st at Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY from 12 – 4:00 PM. Women can register to attend at www.EWGAwestchester.com.

“We’ve spent the winter adding more leagues, clinics, outings and social events to give our members lots to choose from this year, including two exciting new events; the President’s Cup and a Match Play League, which helps women learn how to become competitive golfers” says Hilary Tuohy, President of EWGA Westchester. With eight leagues, 17 clinics, eight outings and more golf to come this year—there’s plenty of golf, for beginners to advanced, for the more than 200 women who are members. New members are always welcome.

“The annual Tee-Off Luncheon is the one time of the year when current and prospective members come together to connect for an afternoon of fun, friendship and a celebration of golf. It’s when women can sign up for leagues, clinics and learn about the many outings and social events that we have planned,” said M. Grace Cantwell, Marketing Committee.

EWGA is the only all-inclusive women’s golf organization in the lower Hudson region. “We find women golfers fall into three categories; new, social golfers and competitive golfers. So we structure our leagues the same way. Everyone feels comfortable and they can progress at their own pace,” said League Chair, Lori Lewis, who has eight leagues scheduled at Sprain Lake, Doral Arrowwood, Saxon Woods and Maple Moor. With events like Golf Boot Camp, Nine and Wine, the Charity Golf Event, Meet Me at the Range and the Chapter Championship there’s something for every women, at every skill level. “We even have friends and family Open Play outings so there’s something to fit everyone’s schedule.” said Anne Marie Brillantes, Golf Events Chair.

Patricia Bottomley, Sponsorship Chair, talks about the financial benefits of being an EWGA member including discounts on clothing, equipment and golf. Gold Level Sponsor, XCEL Credit Union helps subsidize events for members with their financial support. Sponsors also provide valuable gifts, prizes, silent auction items and discounts to EWGA members which help enhance the experience and reduce the cost of golf for all members. This year, a new sponsor, Rosewood Tucker’s Point in Bermuda, has provided a 2-day golf stay at their luxury resort as a silent auction item for the Tee-Off Luncheon.

On and off the course EWGA focuses on educating members about golf rules, etiquette and handicaps. “Golf is a lot more than just swinging a club. Our main goal is to make sure each woman has a positive experience on the golf course, and knowing the rules and etiquette of golf are essential. Women should feel comfortable on any course with any partner--especially in a business setting. Last year we added an on-course Rules 101 session which women found extremely helpful.” said Hollie West, Vice President of EWGA Westchester.

EWGA Westchester is part of a community of thousands of women of all life and professional stages who share a love of golf. EWGA welcomes working women of all playing skills and provides a supportive environment to help women enjoy golf, improve their game and connect with others.

In addition to writing about golf, Dave Donelson distills the experiences of hundreds of entrepreneurs into practical advice for small business owners and managers in the Dynamic Manager's Guides, a series of how-to books about marketing and advertising, sales techniques, motivating personnel, financial management, and business strategy.
