Something Weird On A Kindle

The first edition of my new golf anthology, WEIRD GOLF, is now available for the Amazon Kindle.

The subtitle tells it all: 18 tales of fantastic, horrific, scientifically impossible, and morally reprehensible golf.

It will be available soon for Nook, iPad, and other ebook readers and a trade paperback edition is in the works, too.

In addition to writing about golf, Dave Donelson distills the experiences of hundreds of entrepreneurs into practical advice for small business owners and managers in the Dynamic Manager's Guides, a series of how-to books about marketing and advertising, sales techniques, motivating personnel, financial management, and business strategy.

Sandpiper Bay Stands Out In Myrtle Beach Area

The rolling fairways, impeccable greens, and enough trouble to keep it interesting made Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club the Myrtle Beach area Golf Course of the Year in 2010. It's a 27-hole complex entirely deserving of the honor.

Located north of Calabash, NC, Sandpiper Bay offers three nines by Dan Maples, each with slight differences in character but similar enough to make for a consistent round. They all have inviting fairways with most of the trouble out where you can see it, a good combination of short and long holes, and MiniVerde greens that roll true. Course conditions were uniformly excellent the day I played.

The Sand Course is the shortest of the three at 3191 yards and par 35. The par fives, at 562 and 559 yards, aren't automatic birdies, though, and the three par threes, 173, 177, and 163 yards will make you pay attention, too. The Piper Course, 3399 yards, par 36, has the most contoured greens of the three courses. It also offers three par fives and three par threes. The shortest of the one-shotters is 185 yards, so bring your A-game.

The newest of the three tracks is the Bay Course. It measures 3450 with a par of 36 and is easily the most difficult and most interesting. It opens with a 550-yard par five, 420- yard par four, and one of the best par threes you'll ever play, the 206-yard par three third hole. Unless you've got nerves of steel, your knees will quiver on the tee as you face the looong shot over the water to the elevated green. Anything short will role back down the hill into the lake and if you overshoot, you'll end up in a monster bunker behind the green. You can bail out left, but that will leave you a difficult uphill pitch. The green is huge and cants away from the tee.

There is obviously a lot of good golf in the Myrtle Beach area, but Sandpiper Bay is absolutely one of the best. It should be a must-play for every visitor.

Check Your Posture For A Better Golf Swing

According to the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), the most common fault of nearly 70 percent of amateur golfers is “standing up” or losing posture on the downswing. This produces errant shots, powerless strokes and poor control. Sound familiar?

“This loss of posture causes inconsistency because the lower body and trunk are moving out of position,” says Eanna Rushe, a founder of the Greenwich, CT-based BioSport Technologies LLC, which specializes in golf motion analysis, biomechanics and performance enhancement. “The pros and better golfers maintain their posture or spine angle which allows them to be much more consistent and create much higher club head speed,” he explains. “Good golfers can maintain their posture because of the way they use their lower body, not because they try to keep their head down.”

To correct this problem and help golfers feel and understand what it’s like to be in the optimal swing position, Rushe developed an innovative training aid, the GolfPosturePODTM. Not only does the product assist golfers in keeping the necessary spine angle during their swing, but it is also a tool to strengthen important muscles in the lower body.

Golfers place their backsides against a moveable pad that measures motion. A large LCD screen provides immediate visual feedback about their swing and whether or not posture was maintained. Feedback and feel are keys to an effective training aid, according to Rushe. Golf professionals and fitness trainers can use specific exercises that the golfer can perform on the GolfPosturePODTM to increase lower body and core strength, stability and balance and also work on other common swing faults, such as swaying, sliding and poor weight transfer. Portable and versatile, the GolfPosturePODTM can be used in a fitness center, personal training studio, country club, university golf program or on a driving range.

Paul Kenney, PGA teaching professional at Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford, describes it as a marriage of fitness and swing training. “It’s usually one or the other; the two rarely meet,” says Kenney, who has been using the GolfPosturePODTM to help golfers at Rushe’s Greenwich studio and hopes to bring the device to his club. “The key is that it helps strengthen the golfer while he or she is in the correct positions.”

John Deigan, PGA teaching professional at the Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, says the GolfPosturePODTM helped contribute to one of his students increasing her driver club head speed by eight miles per hour. “Unless you feel the right motion yourself, you’re not going to make that ultimate connection to learn it.”

The GolfPosturePOD™ debuted at the PGA Golf Show in Florida this winter. The commercial product is now available for country clubs, fitness centers and academies. A consumer version will be out next year. For more information, visit www.GolfPosturePOD.com

EWGA Tee-Off Luncheon Starts Women's Golf Season

The mild winter left many women wondering why they put their clubs away at all! The Westchester Chapter of EWGA couldn’t be more ready to spring into action and get a new better-than-ever golf season underway. The season goes into full swing this year with the EWGA's 14th Annual Tee-Off Luncheon on Sunday, April 1st at Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY from 12 – 4:00 PM. Women can register to attend at www.EWGAwestchester.com.

“We’ve spent the winter adding more leagues, clinics, outings and social events to give our members lots to choose from this year, including two exciting new events; the President’s Cup and a Match Play League, which helps women learn how to become competitive golfers” says Hilary Tuohy, President of EWGA Westchester. With eight leagues, 17 clinics, eight outings and more golf to come this year—there’s plenty of golf, for beginners to advanced, for the more than 200 women who are members. New members are always welcome.

“The annual Tee-Off Luncheon is the one time of the year when current and prospective members come together to connect for an afternoon of fun, friendship and a celebration of golf. It’s when women can sign up for leagues, clinics and learn about the many outings and social events that we have planned,” said M. Grace Cantwell, Marketing Committee.

EWGA is the only all-inclusive women’s golf organization in the lower Hudson region. “We find women golfers fall into three categories; new, social golfers and competitive golfers. So we structure our leagues the same way. Everyone feels comfortable and they can progress at their own pace,” said League Chair, Lori Lewis, who has eight leagues scheduled at Sprain Lake, Doral Arrowwood, Saxon Woods and Maple Moor. With events like Golf Boot Camp, Nine and Wine, the Charity Golf Event, Meet Me at the Range and the Chapter Championship there’s something for every women, at every skill level. “We even have friends and family Open Play outings so there’s something to fit everyone’s schedule.” said Anne Marie Brillantes, Golf Events Chair.

Patricia Bottomley, Sponsorship Chair, talks about the financial benefits of being an EWGA member including discounts on clothing, equipment and golf. Gold Level Sponsor, XCEL Credit Union helps subsidize events for members with their financial support. Sponsors also provide valuable gifts, prizes, silent auction items and discounts to EWGA members which help enhance the experience and reduce the cost of golf for all members. This year, a new sponsor, Rosewood Tucker’s Point in Bermuda, has provided a 2-day golf stay at their luxury resort as a silent auction item for the Tee-Off Luncheon.

On and off the course EWGA focuses on educating members about golf rules, etiquette and handicaps. “Golf is a lot more than just swinging a club. Our main goal is to make sure each woman has a positive experience on the golf course, and knowing the rules and etiquette of golf are essential. Women should feel comfortable on any course with any partner--especially in a business setting. Last year we added an on-course Rules 101 session which women found extremely helpful.” said Hollie West, Vice President of EWGA Westchester.

EWGA Westchester is part of a community of thousands of women of all life and professional stages who share a love of golf. EWGA welcomes working women of all playing skills and provides a supportive environment to help women enjoy golf, improve their game and connect with others.
